PVC Pipes – a lightweight and solid foundation for your props
Every ambitious prop project – from a magical staff to a massive battle axe – needs a solid core to provide shape and durability. PVC pipes (polyvinyl chloride) are a proven construction material highly valued by cosplayers. They offer the perfect compromise between low weight, high rigidity, and ease of modification, making them the ideal skeleton for your creations.
When to use PVC pipes?
The lightweight yet durable nature of PVC pipes makes them the perfect choice as a construction base for:
- Staffs and wands: Providing the perfect lightweight core that you can carry comfortably throughout a full day at a convention.
- Polearms: Building a spear, halberd, or scythe? A PVC pipe will provide the necessary rigidity and length.
- Handles for greatswords and axes: An excellent base that can be built up with EVA foam to create a massive yet still lightweight handle.
- Mechanical and Steampunk elements: Perfect for creating barrels, piping, or articulated mechanical arm components.
- Structural frames: Serving as a lightweight skeleton for wings, backpacks, or other large back-mounted components.
Easy integration with other materials
PVC pipes can be easily cut to any desired length. Their smooth surface makes them a fantastic base for layering with EVA foam – simply use a strong contact cement to permanently bond both materials. This allows you to easily give your props the desired shape, thickness, and detail while keeping the entire construction lightweight and sturdy.
